The headlines are literally the most important aspect of your copy across the board, in any copy you are writing. The headline actually translates into other components of the copy.
A headline is like the headline on the front page of a newspaper and works in exactly the same way – it’s big, grabs your attention and is often short but exceptionally powerful. The headline, without question, makes the most substantial difference in sales letters and squeeze pages and a world of difference in emails. When you are using the headline effectively, everything else becomes easy. If you can write a good headline, you can make money! It is possible that you could write a great headline and have substandard copy for the rest of the page and still do extraordinarily well if you are master of writing headlines. In order to improve your copywriting, one of the first things you need to do is study headlines. There are several places you can do this, the number one would be your local newspaper or any of the online newspapers. Pick some of the bigger and more popular national and global papers because the bigger the newspaper the more likely it is that they are paying someone to write headlines. Basically, the better the circulation of the paper, the better the headlines are going to be. Another option is to look at magazines at the supermarket or news stand. In particular, pay attention to the women’s magazines. They are exceptionally good at selling because of great headlines. As you pay attention to the variety of headlines you will start to notice a lot of patterns. You could also learn a lot from the tabloid publications like The National Enquirer, Star magazine or Weekly World News. While these publications might have questions raised over the accuracy of the information inside (and I don’t recommend that you follow their lead with that part) there is no denying that their headlines are effective and they create the desired action of making people pick up the magazine and read it or buy it. When you are writing headlines, be willing to write anything down that you come up with, even if it is so ridiculous that it makes you uncomfortable. This is exactly what you should be doing in order to master the art of copywriting. Headlines have the most impact and the most amount of change that you can possibly integrate into any sales message. People will read the headline and buy without reading anything else on the page – if you headline is good. Focus mastering this one skill first and foremost in order to increase your success with copywriting. |
